Norw. J. Bot. 19:235, 1972. - Polyporus sarcites Fr. Nova Acta Reg. Soc. Sci. Upsal, Ser. 3 Vol 1:66, 1851 (C: ).

FRUITBODY perennial, solitary, pileate, applanate and broadly sessile to dimidiate, or even subpendant with a tendency to a vertex at the basal part of the pileus, up to 10 cm wide and long, 2 cm thick at the base, woody hard when dry. PILEUS first dark reddish-brown and hispid in narrow to wide, weakly sulcate zones, with age the upper hyphae become agglutinated, and blackish, partly flattened, but also partly scrupose, often zonewise and with some radial striae, in section the upper indurated layer is easily visible over a much lighter context, margin acute. PORE SURFACE yellow brown contrasting the pileus, pores small, 7-8 per mm, tubes concolorous with the pore surface and bright yellow-brown in actively growing specimens, darker brown in old specimens, up to 8 mm indistinctly stratified. CONTEXT first bright golden-yellow, darkening with age, somewhat radially fibrous and often with small white mycelial strands.

HYPHAL SYSTEM dimitic, generative hyphae simple septate, hyaline and 1-3 µm wide, skeletal hyphae golden-brown, 3-5 µm wide. SETAE abundant, acuminate to slightly ventricose, straight, thick-walled and dark brown, 15-25 x 5-10 µm. SPORES broadly ellipsoid, thin-walled and hyaline, 3-4 x 23.5 µm.

HABITAT. On dead angiosperms. DISTRIBUTION. Central America and Colombia.
