Boletus villosus. Boletus acaulis, submembranaceus planus concentrice transversim lineatus, cinereo-albidus, villosiis; poris difformibus angulatis dentatis pallidis. Prodr. p. 148. Habitat in arboribus emortuis Jamaicae. Pileus variae figurae... initio saepe explanatus resupinatus, deinde reflexus dimidiatus semirotundus, latere subinde attenuato horizontaliter insertus, 1- 2 pollicaris, plerumque tenuis membranaceus planus margine acuto; interdum crassior subcoriaceus rigidiusculus; vix convexus, supra brevissime hirsutus cinereo. albescens, lineis approxituatis concentricis subundulatis transverse exaratus. Trametes villosa (Fr.) Kreisel Gilbertson and Ryvarden (1987) 763. The following is my description of a collection from south Brazil. It agrees well with that of Gilbertson and Ryvarden who emphasize the thin pliant pileus and the dense binding hyphae. Pileus -30 mm in radius, sessile to effuso-reflexed, thin, pliant, rather appressedly silky hairy, pallid white or straw colour with pale brown or greyish zones, finally wholly brownish to greyish brownish margin minutely fimbriate denticulate. Tubes -2 mm long, becoming minutely spinous with short hyphal pegs, pale ochraceous to pale straw colour; pores 300-600 µm wide, angular, more or less entire, the dissepiments thinning to the edge, pale straw colour to pale ochraceous. Flesh 0.3 mm thick or less, very thin, coriaceous, no crust. On twigs and branches in secondary forest. Brazil, Estado do Rio, Niteroi, Corner s.n. 25 Aug. 1947. Spores 5-7.5 x 2.5-3.3 µm, white, smooth, ellipsoid, aguttate, inamyloid. Basidia 15-18 x 5-5.5 um; sterigmata 4, 3.5-4.5 µm. long. Cystidia none. Hyphal pegs short, abundant. Hyphae trimitic, clamped, not encrusted, not dextrinoid; skeletals 3-5 µm wide, thick-walled, unbranched, unlimited; binding hyphae dense and coralloid. Surface of pileus with long, more or less decumbent skeletal ends rather thin-walled. This species should be easily recognised in the field. var. A The following is my description of a collection from north Brazil, which differs especially in the larger spores. Pileus -30 mm in radius, sessile, finely hirsute, thin, pliant, fuscous with pale subglabrous narrow zones; margin white. Tubes -1.5 mm long, white then somewhat pallid fuscous ochraceous; pores 300-450 µm wide, with thin dissepiments developing unequally to give subconfluent and subhexagonal pores, dentate but not irpicoid, white. Flesh 0.5-1 mm thick at the base of the pileus, coriaceous, white; tomentum -0.8 mm thick; no crust. On dead wood at the edge of the forest. Brazil, Belem do Para, Corner s.n. 9 Aug. 1947. Spores 6.5-10 x 3.5-4 µm, white, smooth, ellipsoid, thin-walled, aguttate, inamyloid. Cystidia none. Hyphal pegs minute, scattered. Hyphae as in var. villosa, the skeletal 4-6 µm wide. Tomentum composed of the more or less fasciculate ends of skeletal hyphae with thick walls and fuscous contents. |
