Macroscopic characters

Colony diameter on CYA after seven days incubation at 25°C 45-70 mm; conidia black; exudate and soluble pigment absent; reverse pale yellow. Colonies on MEA 54-64 mm in diameter; conidia black; exudate and soluble pigment absent; reverse uncolored. Colonies on CY20S 60-70 mm in diameter; conidia black; exudate and soluble pigment absent; reverse uncolored to pale yellow. Colonies on CZ 40-50 mm in diameter; conidia black; exudate and soluble pigment absent; reverse uncolored to pale yellow. Colonies on CYA at 37°C 35-70 mm in diameter.

Microscopic characters

Stipes 900-1600 um long, smooth-walled, hyaline to pale brown in color. Vesicles 40-60 um in diameter, globose, pale yellow to pale brown. Aspergilli biseriate. Conidia 3.5-4.5 um in diameter, globose to subglobose in shape, surface texture rough to very rough.

Note

A. niger belongs to a species complex. Molecular data indicate that at least one other species is present, but taxonomic work to resolve the problems in this complex is still underway.
